Juun J is one of those designers who can give you that extra something without turning a classic piece into something extreme. The designer, who studied in Seoul, Korea, founded his own brand in 2007 after working for other companies, including Club Monaco. In 2009, Juun became the winner of the Samsung Fashion Design Fund. After a collaboration with Reebok, the fund aided him in working with other brands like Mykita and Speedo.

Sonny Groo sat down with Juun J for VMAGAZINE.COM a few days after showing his Spring/Summer 2012 collection in Paris.

SONNY GROO First of all, congratulations on your latest collection and show. What makes you come to Paris to show your collection instead of in any other place like New York, or in Asia?
JUUN J I do a show in Asia occasionally, for example in Seoul but Paris is the only place I can really show off. In Paris, the core of the industry comes together and I feel that I get more respect showing here than in any other place.

SG Would you ever attempt womenswear?
JJ Many people are asking me why I’m not designing womenswear. To be honest, my collections always show a big amount of oversized pieces—I really love the oversized aspect. For a woman to be wearing one of my menswear items, it’s already oversized on her. Therefore, I think more women should wear my menswear!

SG What is your next step?
JJ If I have the time, I really like gardening. It’s something I see myself doing when I’m older as well, maybe after my career as a designer. As for now, I will put my main focus on designing clothes as it’s the thing I do best.

SG What did you want to become when you were a teenager? Did you always want to be a fashion designer?
JJ Yes, always.

SG How would your friends describe you?
JJ I think they would say kind things. For example, that I am a caring and an honest person. Anything less normal could be that I always carry candles around, preferably from Costes or Diptyque. Now that I think about it, maybe someday I would like to have my own candle or perfume.

SG Many designers are incorporating the Internet into their shows. How important is the Internet and being online for you?
JJ It’s good that the possibilities are there. However, I find it important to have people attend my shows in person and see the clothes in real life.

SG Most of your collections consist of black and white tones. Any color is only shown at the end during the finale. Would you ever think about doing more pieces in color?
JJ It’s simple, black and white are my favorite colors. That doesn’t mean I don’t like color. Maybe the finale from this show could be the start of my next collection, let’s see.

A Raft of Champion Ideas
Breaking up

The Korean designer Juun J also is full of ideas. His collection, “Deviated,” played with the concept of breaking up the linear planes of men’s suiting.

Collars came outfitted with gold zippers, sweaters were knitted to drop into wide holes at the hip, and suits were slashed open at the wrists and ankles to expose bare flesh. The models, styled to look like sons of Mr. Spock in footwear by Kiroic that seemed chiseled out of cement blocks, had a space-age vibe.

But the asymmetrical blazers, textured leather jackets and sleeveless trench coats they wore had a noble grace, outfitted as they were with gold embellishments.

If this collection had a fault, it was the lack of editing. The designer should remember that it is possible to have too much of a good thing.

Award-winning South Korean designer Juun J was invited to participate as a foreign guest among the Catalan designers. Having already shown during Paris menswear last month, we knew we were in for a treat. These were seriously dapper looks for the re-birth of the original gentleman, futuristic Mad Men you could say. Classic menswear head to toe had been confused and duplicated on top of itself like two fornicating insects – sleeves on sleeves and shoulders on shoulders. Another twist to a classic came via Juun’s partnering with Chinese shoe designer Kim Kiroic who added thick hexagonal soles to the leather boots.

Juun refers to this aesthetic as "street tailoring", continuing, "I like to overlap different items and silhouettes and change them. I restructure the classical items or take things to pieces to make totally new items and silhouettes."

The South Korean designer plays with layering and adds a surprising new dimension to classic menswear

Note well that South Korea's rising star goes by the name of Juun. J and it is the simplest of games that today gave way to what is indubitably the most bodacious of his collections. In lieu of beginning his production from a convoluted narrative, Juun instead proceeded with the intention of reforming classical suiting and adding layer upon layer - two very plain exercises which rarely give way to anything which captures the imagination. Yet it was this unassuming path which led to an artists' colony of gentlemen who carried themselves with an air of bespoke dishevelment; tall and broad in their reinvented suiting, they shifted peacefully down the runway sporting pavilion berets and the contented expressions of assured commercial success.

Pairing again with prolific Chinese shoe designer Kim Kiroic to produce the footwear for this collection, the men of Juun. J did not misstep in their winged Hermes ankle boots of stiff leather which were mounted on thick hexagonal soles. And all of this from a creator who did not invent an insincere narrative around a dapper male but instead chose abstract parameters and found elegance within them? This unofficial homage to the secret love-child of Sherlock Holmes and a samurai is the portent of a very fertile imagination.

Dazed Digital: Is this season a call to a greater something to tailoring dabbled in?
Juun. J: I think it is one of my greatest strengths. Previously I was focussing on casualwear and footwear, but I wanted to return to something more classic. I love tailoring. Who doesn't?

DD: Where were some of the visual references?
Juun. J: It was about incorporating classical menswear into something new and alien. I took the beret and transformed it into a UFO, you know?

DD: So what was your story for the man?
Juun. J: This man likes wearing jackets. These men like wearing jackets. And so I variated on this. It was very simple. I love layers, and so I add and transform and confuse.

It’s a design student’s trick to sew on an extra shirt sleeve where it doesn’t belong, but the Juun.J collection proves that extra sleeves can work — all you need to do is wear two jackets. The Korean designer took a few different approaches to this. In some cases the two jackets were discrete and separate, in other cases they were connected at their lower edge so the first could be worn normally, and the second worn on the shoulders or carried over the elbow elegantly. Trenches and leather jackets unzipped at the arm hole so that when worn as an outer layer, their sleeves could hang empty next to arms sleeved by the inner layer. (Interestingly, the otherwise sedate Louis Vuitton employed the same trick with a few looks.) On the right guy, all of this comes off as a bit opulent, showy in an awesome Keith Richards sort of way. Jackets are expensive, so if you can afford it, go for two.

Education
After graduating from Esmod in Séoul in 1992, Juun.J designed for men's fashion labels Chiffons, Club Monaco and NIX. Then thanks to his skills and the experience he had developed, in 1999 he launched his own line called Lone Costume which he presented at Seoul Collection from 2001 to 2006.

The turning point
His own name was like a lucky charm to him and ultimately what brought him success. In 2007 he presented a new brand named after himself, Juun.J, and since then his collections have made it to the Menswear Fashion Week in Paris season after season.

Often he participates in the Fashion Week's calendar of other International fashion centres: for instance, he was Foreign Guest Designer at the Hellenic Fashion Week and at the Modny Desant Festival in 2008 and in 2010 took part in Seoul and Barcellona Fashion Weeks.

Awards and nominations
The finalist nomination to the Swiss Textiles Awards is only the last of a series which saw the Korean designer being awarded with recognition. He was also among the eight men of the year nominated by Arena Korea in 2008 and won for two consecutive years the Samsun Fashion Design Fund in 2009 and 2010.

Challenge for the future
Magazine Dong-a nominated Juun.J as one of the more representative Fashion Designers of 2020 fashion.

His strength
Unpredictability.

Season after season, Juun.J renews the mood and style of his collections without ever repeating himself but always proving outstanding sartorial skills. These traits of his has allowed him to shift from one project to the next and be always successful in whatever he does.

Alternative projects
Since 2005, he collaborates with a few very important names in the fashion world, as well as with artists and brands involved in design and illustration.

Some of these projects started back at the times when he was designing Lone Costume, a line to which both the English artist Simon Henwood and Japanese graphic designer Nuts worked on.

In 2009 then, Juun.J started a project with illustrator Lorenzo Petrantoni.

In fashion, between 2008 and 2009 two British brands Chris & Tibor and Linda Farrow hired him to design their new collections while Topman involved him in the worldwide project "The Classic White T-shirt" and also Mykita, the eyewear German brand managed to get the designer on board for a collaboration.

Even the sports world is also interested in the designer, so much so that since 2007 the Korean designer has worked more than once with sports brands of the calibre of Reebok, Speedo and Kim Kiroic.

What is more, starting from next January a new project will see Juun.J collaborating with the womenswear brand, Ground-Zero.

Charity projects
This year Juun.J took part in the Six Scents Series Three, a project in aid of charity promoted by perfume brand, Six Scents, in collaboration with Givaudan, the make-up brand famous for having created the first perfume in history - "Shocking" by Elsa Schiapparelli in 1937 - and aimed at raising funds for the protection of nature and the environment at large thanks to charity organization Pro Natura.

His creations are
A mix of different styles and genres - punk, country, rock and classic - all layered together in one piece.

Juun J combines, on different levels, casual and chic. The result is a juxtaposition of rigid structures and soft shapes, sharp cuts and more loose draping. The whole product is often monochromatic and is characterized by a unisex approach to fashion

His style
"Street tailoring", a sort of sartorial constructivism reduced to the lowest terms (although every creation shows great attention to details) which all together exudes freshness and tidiness.

Leit motif
Each one of his collections is characterized by clear military references : straps and laces, hoods and reinforced shoulders, paratrooper trenches and cloaks and big pockets; all inspired to the period he spent his military service in South Korea where it is compulsory.

Method
"I start off by following an idea characterized by a specific mood - he says. The design itself comes at a later stage. The most important element is that all drawings must belong together, they must have something in common and show a leit motif".

A bit retrò, a bit futuristic, Juun.J moves swiftly along his personal time-line creating outfits that are both wearable and innovative. While remaining always loyal to tailoring, he enriches every season's collection with ad-hoc and yet interchangeable details.

Inspiration
Outlining a specific filed is rather limited since his collections draw from the most varied sources of inspiration: from punk to gothic elements to end with a bohemian atmosphere, all combined seamlessly.

It is very likely that cinema ranks high among his influences: theer are indeed quite evident comparisons with the movies of David Lynch and Ridley Scott, but also Michael Curtiz, Sergio Leone and Anthony Minghella. Each and every collection echoes a movie, a place or a time in history.

Advice
Not recommended to those who are very jealous of their clothes. Thanks to Juun.J's unisex approach of his clothes and the easiness in mix-matching them, women will be very likely to "steal" their boyfriend's garments from his wardrobe.

Dark hair combed with almost geometric care, a neat look and black-framed glasses through which he analyzes the world with his wit and curious eyes. Friendly and open, at work he is painstakingly precise and very focused.
